Zed is so nice. So many nice details. Like their native vim mode not only works great, but it works anywhere there’s a multiline text input.

  • Had not heard of it. Gonna check it out!
  • Nice let me know what you think
  • It’s very good.
  • Native vim mode?
  • I believe I actually learned about it from you a year or two ago. I’ve used it on and off but it feels like it’s finally starting to reach maturity.
  • Yeah, like not a third-party extension
  • Is it full vim with plugins or mostly key bindings?
  • It's not full vim (no plugins), but it includes some features normally provided by plugins, and is integrated with Zed specifically: zed.dev/docs/vim
  • Ah thanks for the link. I’ll check it out!
  • It's missing a lot basics tho if you come from VSCode or other IDEs. Like for example it still doesn't have a builtin git history viewer.
  • Zed is so good! It was the only good modern alternative for Sublime for me 👌
  • Yes! What are you using now? I think they adapt the config to Sublime or VSCode. It was pretty easy to start 👌

I absolutely agree. As a sublime text nativr, I hated VS Code, but Zed feels like home.
  • Conrad did a great talk on Zed’s vim mode! youtu.be/5z9Dbuw6EXA?...
  • lol! Yes that was also me. Sublime was just too good and snappy compared to VSCode. I just got a bit jealous of all the integrations and modern tooling (like LSPs, better AI tooling, etc)
  • For a brief moment I wondered if zed shaw came out of the wilderness and was writing IDEs and was reminded of this. We’ve (Ruby folk) been through a lot of dramatic times. harmful.cat-v.org/software/rub...

Me as a Neovim user reading this conversation

  • 😆
  • Oh wow, somehow I missed that Conrad was working on Zed, and I see for some time. That checks out!
  • If you are a UX designer that uses Neovim, you deserve it!

The biggest superiority complex is usually with those using emacs :)
  • I’d worry about using a free thing that is VC funded. It’s a guaranteed rug pull at some point in the future.
  • Yeah. At least they are open source, but yeah.
  • tbf I think there’s zero market for a paid editor that would satisfy a VC payoff so the rug pull will likely come elsewhere (what can you sell through an editor)

We can probably easily assume it's gonna be paid AI features
  • Yeah, I love Zed as a former Sublime user than never quite gelled with VS Code. Though I need to find/make a solution for “run the test related to this file” and a few other bits I use often like “copy permalink and selection as markdown”
  • which they have but yeah, that would be my assumption
  • Yeah, I’ll pay them for that, too. I like their agent UX. And especially if they improve their tab suggestions.
  • I’ve been using it for a few months now and I find it fantastic! Super snappy! 🏎️💨 I disabled all the AI features tho, and it allows you to hide the related UI elements, so 🔝
  • That is great to hear! How was the transition? These days you can also use Claude Code inside Zed. I personally like it because it is very easy to reference open files and it uses the code diff accept thingy which is a bit nicer than natively in the Terminal in my opinion.
  • Zed is the editor I've had the easiest time switching to in the 20 years (😱) I've used vim. It just feels right.
