Part of the problem for writers migrating from Substack is losing platform benefits and network effects. A real alternative must be more than just a publishing platform. It needs networks and communities too.

I’m going to continue to talk about building (and migrating to) infrastructure to counter the right wing bullshit machine. Here’s another piece of that. We need good (better?) alternatives to Substack and we need to take our content and eyeballs over to them. (source: Kate Starbird on Bluesky)

  • Example: one big complaint people have with BlueSky and Substack is they can’t find posts that are relevant to them. This makes sense because both apps are follower-based. But Reddit is an explicitly interest-based app and it offers a path to finding new people you’d like to follow.

  • My hypothesis is that having a variety of inter-connected apps will make the whole ecosystem stronger. A Reddit/Discord replacement would actually make BlueSky better and it would make the #atproto Substack better.
  • 💯 IMO there really needs to be alternatives for Substack and Reddit/Discord AND those need to cross-post with BlueSky by default. Getting network effects between apps is the super power of #atproto and it’s what would enable an upstart to compete with Substack.
  • And then @buildwithtori.com and I are trying to build a TikTok/Reels alternative called @skylight.social for interest-based short-form video. One of our goals for Skylight is that it provides more upward mobility on #atproto for newer creators because that’s a pain point right now.
  • So true! Building community is key, especially for creators. That's something we're focusing on at Scout Forge.

  • That’s awesome! After I posted this I was thinking about what an open source Substack competitor built on AT proto (or deeply integrated) would look like. I’m really not sure yet but it would be a neat project.

  • @schlage.town is working on this Please give feedback!
  • just me, a discussion with @angryblacklady.bsky.social would be good, but I really have no right to ask anyone to do anything
  • 100% Agree. Something with a built in fractional economy too. $5/sub is way too high unless it's a big syndicated magazine. Anybody building something like that yet?
